New energy projects to strengthen Uzbekistan`s energy independence — minister
Uzbekistan plans to bring the share of “green” energy to 54% by 2030, though if current growth rates are maintained, this figure could turn out to be even higher. Energy Minister Sherzod Khodjaev stated this in an interview with the «Uzbekistan 24» TV channel following the launch ceremony of new facilities in the country’s regions.
According to the head of the Ministry of Energy, five energy facilities worth over 20 trillion soums were commissioned as part of the event, attended by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
“It should be noted that each of these facilities is unique in its own direction. In particular, one of the largest thermal power plants in Central Asia has been launched. Two of the largest energy storage systems in Central Asia have also been commissioned,” said Sherzod Khodjaev.
In the Nurata district of Navoi region, he said, a combined project has come online, providing for solar power generation together with battery-based energy storage.
“The launch of these projects will undoubtedly strengthen Uzbekistan’s energy independence and create a foundation for attracting new investment. It is worth noting that green energy plays a very significant role among the projects launched today,” the minister said.
In Karakalpakstan, a 200 MW wind power plant has been commissioned. It became the second phase of a project in the Karauzyak district.
“Our respected President launched the first project two years ago. This is the second phase. Overall, the pace of green energy development in Uzbekistan is very high. The task has been set to bring [its share] to 54% by 2030, but I think that if we maintain this pace, we will be able to achieve an even higher result,” said Sherzod Khodjaev.
He added that the conditions and investment environment created in the country are helping attract foreign investors to the energy sector.
Energy projects in the regions
At the ceremony attended by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the launch of 72 major investment projects and 91 social infrastructure facilities worth 50 trillion soums was announced.
These included energy facilities in several regions. In particular, in Syrdarya region, generating capacity of 1,573 MW was discussed; in Karakalpakstan, a 200 MW wind power plant and a 100 MW energy storage system; and in Navoi region, projects expected to generate 657 million kWh of electricity per year.
It was also announced at the event that a 300 MW solar power plant with a 150 MW energy storage system is being commissioned in the Nurata district of Navoi region. According to the region’s leadership, the total capacity of solar and wind power plants launched in Navoi region reaches around 2 GW.
In Namangan region, a 200 MW energy storage facility worth $200 million was presented. The region is also home to two 500 MW solar power plants, while hydropower projects with a total capacity of around 300 MW are being developed in the Chust, Chartak, Naryn and Uychi districts. Another 200 MW project has been announced in Pop district.
