Uzbekistan is ready to produce green hydrogen.
Pilot production of green hydrogen in the Tashkent region, with the participation of Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, may be launched as early as June. In doing so, Uzbekistan is expected to become the sixth country in the world to master one of the environmentally friendly types of fuel.Uzbekistan may begin producing green hydrogen in June. This was stated by the Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, during Uzbekistan Energy Week UEW-2025, which began on May 13 at the CAEx international exhibition complex in Tashkent, reports a correspondent of Gazeta.uz.
“We hope that during the Tashkent International Investment Forum (scheduled for early June — ed.), we will be able to demonstrate the results and officially announce it,” said the Minister.
Speaking at a panel session of the energy conference, Mirzamakhmudov noted that currently only five countries in the world are producing green hydrogen. Thus, Uzbekistan will join the “hydrogen club,” expanding it to six countries.
It is worth recalling that in November 2023, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev launched the construction of a pilot green hydrogen production facility in the Tashkent region with the participation of ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia). The first stage of the $88 million project is expected to commission the production of 3,000 tons of green hydrogen in 2025.
According to "Uzkimyosanoat", the project being implemented in Chirchik envisions, in its second stage, the production of up to 500,000 tons of ammonia per year from green hydrogen, as well as the creation of a wind power plant park with a capacity of up to 2.4 GW.
Experts estimate that through the effective use of alternative energy sources, Uzbekistan may become one of the first countries in the world to produce mineral fertilizers from green hydrogen, which will help decarbonize this sector of the economy and supply high value-added products to global markets.
