The ADB has allocated $250 million for Uzbekistan`s climate resilience reforms.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has allocated a loan of $250 million to Uzbekistan. The loan will support the implementation of a program to transition to a low-carbon economy in sectors such as transport and energy, and to increase the resilience of water resources and agriculture to climate change.

The ADB has approved a loan of $250 million to support the efforts of the government of Uzbekistan to strengthen institutional frameworks for climate transition and accelerate measures to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The program to accelerate climate transition will support the government of Uzbekistan in three areas of reform:

strengthening public financial management;
increasing climate resilience in the management of water and land resources, agriculture, and social protection systems;
accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy in sectors such as transport and energy.
"The program prioritizes decarbonizing the economy and increasing resilience to natural disasters and climate change, while supporting vulnerable populations," said ADB Director General for Central and Western Asia, Evgeny Zhukov. "Uzbekistan is one of the most energy-intensive economies in the world, so the program will support the government's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP by 35% by 2030. This will be achieved through the development of renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency."

"Uzbekistan's water resources are under serious threat due to climate change and inefficient use," said ADB Country Director for Uzbekistan, Kanokpan Lao-Araiya. "This program supports the adoption of legislation that promotes investment in modernizing irrigation systems and smart water resource management, taking climate change into account, to ensure water security and combat accelerating desertification that threatens fragile ecosystems."

"The program was designed to enhance the government's capacity to address the complex challenges of climate change by improving policy coordination, targeted allocation of budget resources, and strengthening monitoring and accountability of climate-related expenditures and indicators," explained ADB Principal Public Sector Specialist, Hanif Rahemtulla.
