Uzbekistan intends to join international treaties on nuclear safety
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree aimed at improving the system of state control in the areas of industrial, radiation and nuclear safety. As part of this decree, inspections have been created within the structure of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety that will monitor enterprises in Navoi, Almalyk, Bekabad and at railway facilities where there are increased risks.
These new units will monitor compliance with safety standards and prevent possible incidents at hazardous production facilities.
From July 1, 2025, practical application of liability measures will begin: legal entities that violate industrial safety requirements at potentially hazardous enterprises, radiation and nuclear safety rules, as well as standards governing the operation of amusement rides, will be subject to fines.
At the same time, Uzbekistan plans to join key international agreements, including the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, the Convention on Assistance in Cases of Radiation Accidents, the Convention on Early Notification of Nuclear Incidents and the Convention on Nuclear Safety.
A number of important draft laws are expected to be developed during the year, including "On Chemical Safety", "On Industrial Safety at Hazardous Industrial Facilities" and "On Radioactive Waste Management". These legislative initiatives will form the basis for strengthening a comprehensive approach to ensuring safety in these areas.
